Moms for Liberty, a group with 285 chapters in 45 states (1), has been designated an extremist group and anti-government organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). SPLC shows that Moms for Liberty advocates for book bans, promotes conspiracy theories, and spreads hateful imagery and messages about the LGBTQ community (2). Funding for Moms for Liberty comes largely from anonymous megadonors (3).

Moms for Liberty focuses on school board elections (4), including many in Colorado (5). The Association is investigating reports of school board members in the Pikes Peak region pledging allegiance to the Moms for Liberty platform.

The American Birthright Standards are social studies standards created by the Civics Alliance (6). They “focus on Western civilization and American exceptionalism and highlight patriotism and Christianity” (7). They claim that the “warping of American social studies instruction has created a corps of activists dedicated to the overthrow of America and its freedoms” (8).

American Birthright is part of a push by the far right to revise Colorado’s Social Studies standards. These efforts include changes to how genocide is taught to Colorado students (9).
